When is homework done?
Structured homework is set in all classes from Senior Infants to 6th Class each night from Monday to Thursday inclusive. No formal homework is set at weekends, but from time to time some project work may be set. Pupils who have not completed homework during the week may be requested to do so at the weekend.
How long should homework take and what tasks are set?
Junior Infants: no formal homework is set during this year. During the latter part of the year some informal tasks may be set, especially in reading.
Senior Infants: homework should take approximately 10 minutes. Tasks may include reading with a sheet of maths activities. Some informal tasks may also be set.
1st & 2nd Class: homework should take approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Spellings, workbook activities and maths may be set.
3rd &4th Class: homework should take approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Homework is recorded in a homework diary. A variety of tasks may be set from the different subject areas.
5th & 6th Class: homework should take approximately 50 minutes. The tasks set would again be from the different subject areas of the curriculum.
What is the parent’s role?
- That the children learn to organise themselves
- That the children learn to take responsibility for their work
- That the children form good work habits
- That the children develop work and study skills on a gradual basis aiming at independent study by senior level.

- To practice existing concepts and skills
- To ensure that there is complete understanding of new concepts.

What is the parent’s role?
- To oversee the homework being done, especially in the lower classes. In the upper classes parents can help by checking the quality of the work
- To inform the class teacher of any difficulties being experienced by their chid
- To help their child to develop good work habits in terms of organisation and presentation of work
- If a child is exceeding the recommended time in doing their homework and the parent is satisfied that the child has been applying themselves to the task, the parent may sign the incomplete work stating this to be the case.
