GOING BANANAS IN THEIR PYJAMAS!! 4TH CLASS HAD A BALL!!
THANKS TO THE CELL EXPLORERS TEAM FOR COMING INTO OUR CLASS THIS WEEK. WE BECAME CELL EXPLORERS WITH THEM AND UNDERTOOK AN EXPERIMENT TO EXTRACT DNA FROM A BANANA. THE HUMBLE BANANA HAS 22 CHROMOSOMES, WHERE US HUMANS HAVE 46. WE LEARNED LOADS ABOUT CELLS, CHROMOSOMES AND DNA.
Our school tour was REALLY good fun!!!Have a look at some of the activities we did.
Many congratulations to Fiona, who won a photography competition at NUIG, for her beautiful photograph entitled
"The Wind from Below".
A very big thank you to Katrin, Nil's mum, who came into class to bake a German Zebra cake with us. It sure looks delicious!
In History and Geography, we have been learning about urban development in our local area, and we took a look at how much the university has changed since it opened its doors in 1849. We took advantage of a fine day and took our art lesson over to the Quadrangle in NUIG, the original university building. We saw lots of modern additions to the university along the way, built over the years to accommodate the ever growing student population.
We also saw lots of interesting flora and fauna on our travels!!!
We have been learning about the Flora and Fauna of the River Corrib and its banks. The fish in the river include pike, trout, perch and roach, aswell as those slippery eels...the fish you see below are made from coat hangers and nylon.
2 gorgeous goslings came to visit our classroom, as did a young wild hare.
Here we are figuring out how to make 3D shapes using art straws and plasticine. It's not as easy as you might think!

We celebrated World Autism Awareness Day by wearing blue and releasing blue balloons into the blue (in places) sky.

Take part in the Greenwave Challenge by logging on to www.greenwave.ie
There are 6 species to look out for; hawthorne, ash, horse chestnut, primrose, frogspawn and the swallow.
Try to be the first to spot the very beautiful flying machine-the swallow. Nobody has seen one so far this Spring, but they are on their way.
Happy spotting!

It's been a while and we've been VERY busy!!!
We've been so busy in fact, we keep forgetting to grab the camera, but here are photos of some of the things we've been up to...
We really love Science in 4th class and we've done a lot of interesting experiments since we arrived back in January.
While exploring Forces we made parachutes to investigate Air Resistance, we also investigated Water Pressure and Friction through experiments...this month we're learning about Mixing and Separating Materials...our first experiment was extra fun because it involved minor explosions!!! We mixed baking soda and vinegar and watched for the chemical reaction between them...it was pretty cool...we've been building volcanoes and are waiting to test them out!
if you look at the photos below you'll see our latest experiment...we made filters to try and make very muddy water drinkable...we didn't go so far as to drink it though!!!

We are such amazing artists in 4th...here's a little look at our class at work...we'll add photos of some of our finished pieces soon....
We all love PE - we've been doing Gymnastics and Gaelic football, amongst other things and have just started hurling with Gerry... have a look at us in action!
Activity Week has been and gone and fun was had by everyone!
We did Printing with Reuben's mum, made pancakes with Ailbhe-Lisa's mum, became animators for the morning with Amber's dad and built bird boxes with Ava and Kara's dad...Tom Cuffe came into our class and taught us a lot about birds and a little about origami! We went on a nature trail over to the university and made volcanoes in class. Probably everyone's highlight was watching the 5th class fashion show, it was hilarious!!! Hopefully that'll be us next year! We also did quite a bit of digging and planting about the place and had a music workshop with Diarmuid where we composed a jingle for a chocolate bar ad.
Penpals From the U.S.A
Fourth Class are really excited because they have recently got penpals from Bristow ,Virginia, U.S.A. They are in fourth grade and we are writing letters to them. It is great fun learning about their lives and about America. Maybe when we are older we might visit our penpal.
