Welcome to the First Class Webpage.
Take some time to have a look at what fun things we have gotten up to so far this year!
Flashin' the Cash!
To help us learn about money, First Class got to visit the shop. It was important to look at the price of the item we wanted to buy. Then to check if we had enough of money. We were all rich with 50cent each to spend. Sometimes we got change, but othertimes, we spent all our money in the shop!
Hurricane of Hurling-Stars!
First Class have been learning hurling skills with Jerry, our super hurling coach. Take a look at us in action!
Now and Then...or is it Then and Now...?
In History, as part of our S.E.S.E., First Class were learning about the progression of time. So it was only natural we took a look at ourselves! Here are the timelines that each child in First Class completed with help from home. Fantastic work guys!
And here is the timeline we did together as a class, beginning in Junior Infants and finishing up at out current memory today!
Our knowledge of place value (up to 99) in 1st Class is so amazing that we are setting you a challenge! Try out this game that we were recently playing. Match the value to the correct tens and units! But BEWARE! Don't get it wrong...
Weighing it Up!
This month we have been working hard at understanding measurement, focusing on weight. We used approximate weights with items such as cubes, lollipop sticks and marbles. We then investigated the weight of 1 kilogramme and whether or not we could find items heavier or lighter than it.
Here is a weight game that we were playing with in class on the interactive whiteboard. Enjoy!
We're Stringing you Along!
Using some string and paint, we made some fasinating prints. Simple to do, and lovely and messy. Jacqlyn was very happy we had to get our hands dirty! Here we are creating our masterpieces.
Bob's Builders got to Work!
We designed lots of different types of buildings, and just want to show you how they turned out.
Activity Week with First Class!
First Class had the best time during activity week. Take a look at what was got up to!
Getting our Groove on! Dance with Laurie!
Some Shenanigans with Music from the Scallywags!
Firework Painting with Marbles!
Pancakes with "Pancake King" Paul!
Gymnastics Demonstration with St. Joesph's!
First Class are Batty!
We learnt a lot about bats!
Awesome Astronomy with Ray!
Storytelling with Janet!
Sock Puppet Mania with Carol!
A Teddy Epidemic!
Our children in First Class are very caring. Our teddies weren't feeling very well so we took them off to the Teddy Bear Hospital in N.U.I.Galway. We learnt so much about doctors and hospitals. We also learnt how to take care of our teddies until they felt better. Take a look at the photos to see how we got on!
Our Talented Potters get Painting and Decorating!
A bit of paint here and a bit of glitter there. First Class are hard at work decorating their candle holders.
Using just our hands to squeeze and our fingers to pinch, push, and pull, we created these wonderful candle holders. Next step is to let them dry. After this we will paint them! Watch this space!!
We are Designers!
We worked in pairs to design a new castle for Queen Juliet. We met her when we had a drama lesson. Her castle was in need of some fixing so we got designing. Here we are drawing some designs for her new castle!
We can do a self-assessment after a lesson!
After a learning activity we can use our self-assessment fans to tell Jacqlyn how well we think we have learnt!
We are BRILLIANT at recognising Tens and Units!!
Guzzler's Visit to First Class.
Guzzler is a friendly monster who wastes a lot of energy and he needed First Class' help. Together we learnt about energy efficiency and environmental awareness. We also learnt that the sun is a source of energy and it creates an energy chain. All this was organised by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). Take a look at our photos of Guzzler's visit.
A winning Website! www.getns.ie won the best school website as part of 'The Junior Spiders 2011'. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!
Inspired by Hundertwasser
We worked hard to create art inspired by Hundertwasser, the Austrian artist. His use of colour and experiments with line is what inspired our works of art. Here we are using chalk and getting our creative-juices flowing.
Storytelling with Pete Mullineaux
Pete Mullineaux came to tell First Class a few stories this week. He captivated our attention and sang a few songs with us. We wished he could have stayed longer, but hopefully he will come and visit us again soon! Thanks Pete! We really enjoyed ourselves.
Both the children in First Class and their teachers were absolutely 'bubbled' away with all the exciting things that we were shown at the bubble demonstration! We couldn't believe our eyes. There were a lot of 'oooooohs' and 'ahhhhhhhs'. It was great to learn the science behind how bubbles are formed and it was amazing to see all the different tricks our demonstrater could do.
Many hands make light work!
We learnt that we can measure length in many different ways. We used cubes first to measure how long Jacqlyn is, then we found out how many hands long Laura is. Can you remember what the answers were?
Check out how we measured other things in the classroom with our hands!!
1st, 2nd, 3rd...
1st Class learnt lots about ordinal numbers. We can now recognise them written in both numeral form and in the written form. We were so good at them that we got to play this super fun game. Have a go!
1st Class got the opportunity to help make a marigold petal and oil ointment. Check out the Green Schools page to see the rest of the photos. Just click the photo to follow the link, and enjoy!
1st Class took on the challenge of life drawing and did an excellent job of it too. With only a clip-board, pencil and eraser in hand the children drew what they could see. We also took the time to walk around to view and respond to all the art work after the class. These photos are of the children hard at work.
2-D Shapes Maths Trail with Avril
Not one inch, or 2.54cm, of our playground was left alone when 1st Class went on a 2-D Shapes Maths Trail with Avril. We found squares, triangles, rectangles, circles and semi-circles.Take a look at how we got on.
Learning with Bee-Bot...
Bee-Bot has come to help us with our maths and other areas of the curriculum. This week he popped in to show us how he can do both addition and subtraction on a number-line. We can't wait until he comes back again...
A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea,....
This week in History we have been learning about Christopher Columbus. Follow the link to listen to the story about his life and voyage.
That "sounds" interesting...
The children in First Class are fantastic scientists. We were learning to identify and differentiate high and low sounds, loud and soft sounds. We examined a variety of different objects and listened carefully...Take a look at how we got on!
The Complete Picture
As much as I loved the "Box of Crayons" display outside the First Class room, I had to take it down. But it is not gone forever! I have turned it into a photostory for us all to enjoy! Take a look!
We had a special visit from our school's postman, Postman Pat (and no, he told us he doesn't have a black and white cat!) We put him in the hotseat and he did very well to keep his cool during our quick-fire questioning. Thanks for coming in to visit us Pat!
We have been practising our football skills with our coach! We know how we should pick up the ball and kick it down to our team mates to try and get a goal. Some future GAA stars here. Watch this space!
Hallowe'en has come and gone!
First Class were by far the scariest class in the school on Friday 28th October! Some of the children dressed up and donated €1 to the Educate Together Fundraising day. Well done to all - the efforts were amazing! I hope the photo isn't too scary to look at! ENJOY!
We melted the Wicked Witch with water! Wooohooo! We won!
'Losha' - a memory we won't forget!
First Class went to see 'Losha' as part of Baboró, Ireland's biggest children's art festival, in the Black Box on Tuesday 18th. It was a show filled with magic and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The story revolves around forgotten memories. Everyone has some items kept that bring back different memories, but what happens when time passes and these things become forgotten? Thats what Losha, the magical creature (and main character), explores during the show. With the use of lights, puppets and music we were all hypnotised by Losha storytelling. First Class like to think it is the best show of the whole festival and we were so lucky to see it.

The artists in First Class have been working hard in September to produce some amazing pieces exploring the process of drawing. To get our creative juices flowing we listened to some music and responded to it with our pencils in-hand and our colouring pencils at the ready. Check out our Photostories below, complete with the music tracks we were listening to. ENJOY!

Responding to Music
Welcome to First Class!!!
Welcome back to a new year. We're very excited to be in First Class now. We are looking forward to learning and doing lots of great new things with our teacher Jacqlyn. We've already visited the library to see Pignut Puppet company's show about the X Factor. It was great fun. Stay tuned for more news of what we're getting up to!
